Think Local for This Year's #GivingTuesday

The Tuesday after Thanksgiving is known as “Giving Tuesday,” a special day to make a positive impact in your neighborhood after the holiday and the rush of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday.

“As we approach Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for all our residents, who live out the spirit behind Giving Tuesday,” said Sales Associate Zack Hamsley. “For many of them, retiring well means giving back to others, so they stay very involved in organizations in Columbus. Whether it’s hosting bake sales or making masks for health-care workers, they are always ready to pitch in. I’m proud to work for an organization where my mission is to serve such big-hearted residents and the greater community of Columbus, Georgia.”

If you’re thinking about how you can support some well deserved organizations for Giving Tuesday, here are three recommendations from the team at Spring Harbor:

1. Think Local.

National and international organizations are incredibly important to our world, but it is our local organizations, such as the food bank or the Rotary Club, where you see the impact of neighbors helping neighbors. Just like shopping local keeps dollars in your community, local donations keep resources where they will support Columbus families.

2. Remember “Time, Talent, Treasure.”

Giving Tuesday doesn’t have to be a financial donation. You may earn a tax benefit for donating money, but donating your time and talents can be just as valuable. If there is an organization you feel passionate about, contact them this week to see how you can best help them.

3. Consider Year-Round Giving.

Extensions of gratitude all year long through donations and volunteering means the world to small businesses and charities that dedicate their days to improving the lives of others. Giving the gift of smiles is a beautiful thing, during the holidays and after. If you have the option, consider setting up recurring payments or request birthday gifts in the form of a donation to an organization of your choice.

“We’re proud to be part of the community here in Columbus,” said Zack. “and I hope this year’s Giving Tuesday offers us the chance to come together to serve this city.”
